Why the Hair Mitts Methodâ„¢ Works

03/12/2018

Here's the secret: that lovely sebum we produce naturally cleans, moisturizes, and protects our hair and bodies. Rich in triglycerides, fatty acids, antioxidant vitamin E, and containing wax esters and squalene, sebum is naturally antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral, and naturally provides a low-level of SPF.[i] Instead of stripping it off every day with toxic chemicals, why not use it to create a clean, lustrous, toxin-free mane?

The thought of eliminating shampoo and conditioner can be intimidating. I can hear the moans now: "I can't go a day without shampoo or I'm a grease pit!"

One theory offered by the no-poo community is that the body adjusts to having the sebum stripped everyday and ramps up production to replace what's been removed with shampoo; the theory being that the scalp, within 3 to 4 week's time, will adjust to not having the sebum stripped, and therefore produce less sebum. While I'd love to blame the commercial hair care industry for requiring us to detoxify our scalps, this common no-poo refrain is likely bunk. In reality, sebum production is tightly controlled by our hormones.[ii]

Users of the Hair Mitts Method have found that, unlike other no-poo methods, there is no "detox" period with Hair Mitts. No schlepping around town for weeks with a greasy head while your scalp "adjusts;" with Hair Mitts, your hair is clean the very first time you try it!

That said, there may be years of product residue coating your hair, and your hair might benefit from a natural, toxinless clarifying agent such as a Moroccan Red Clay (Rhassoul) Mask, or a Raw Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse, but once the removal of built-up product is complete, you may find you'll never need to use these methods again.

Two other popular no-poo processes, the tedious and time consuming "scritch and preen" method, and spending 15 minutes a day brushing hair with a boar bristle brush are also rendered redundant and unnecessary with Hair Mitts.

Why?

The secret is in the towel. When you stroke your damp hair, beginning at the scalp, you are moving the sebum from the scalp throughout all the strands of your hair. The sebum is no longer being stripped, nor left to accumulate on your scalp, but is redistributed throughout the hair, locking in moisture and coating each strand with naturally antimicrobial protection. Additionally, hard water deposits which would otherwise weigh down and dull your hair, often a hurdle for no-pooers, are removed by the towel.

The end result is fresh, clean, toxinless hair.
